I'm Sure I Saved This For A Reason

I run across a lot of websites that I'm sure others would be interested in but they're not really suitable for seeding. Some of them, like this one from the Federation of American Scientists seem to me to be the kind of thing that some of the more serious writers here on NV might be interested in. This site, the Sunlight Foundation looks like they might help a busy investigator but it's makes a poor seed.

Some of them are just so hope inducing that you want everyone to see them and be inspired. Some of them are empowering. Some of them defy simple classification.

And finally, this is one that I just thought was such an odd juxtaposition. I don't know if any of you know who the Gorillaz are, but I like their music. I also play Mah Jong. Now I'll bet no one thought they'd every see Gorillaz mah jong, but I found it and I'm sharing it.

So there they are, some of the sites that I'm certain someone could really use, but not me...except for the Mah Jong one.

Wheel, you're not old! I think we only become "old" when we close our minds to new experiences and stop learning. Intellectual death surely precedes physical death.

You look younger than me, and I'm almost 46. Clipping to my column for future reference. Thanks again, Wheel.

umm, that's not me in my avatar. Sorry! Most people who know me know it's Troy Anthony Davis. I've had his as my avatar for about 2 1/2 years now. I pledged to keep him as my avatar till he received a new trial or until the state of Ga. kills him. I'm 60 IRL.

Well, that's still not old. Sorry, about the confusion on my part, even with my reading glasses I couldn't read the print around the avatar. I'm not familiar with Mr. Davis' case. I'll read up on it sometime.

Ah play mah jongg, also, but I like this site -- http://www.freegames.ws/games/boardgames/mahjong/freemahjong.htm The bad part is that they don't give any hints but you can just click on restart to get a new game.

I'm always open to good ideas that are low tech and much needed. The Water Cone fills the bill.

It's simple to use, stackable, easy to transport and very durable. It can distill up to 1.5 liters a day from brackish or salt water.

You can get started by simply tearing up the box, planting in soil, and watering. For a more detailed planting guide you can consult the Growing Instructions included with your box—and also available online—where we provide tips to help your Life Box™ flourish.

I like the concept, they are pricey but inpregnating cardboard fiber with tree seeds so all that is needed is to 'tear up, plant and water' seems like something that couldn't hurt and might help.

I won't lie to you, I've dreamed of making first contact with an alien species since I read the Voyage to the Mushroom Planet books when I was a kid. Yes, believe it or not, ET was not even close to the first story of a kid making contact with an alien. Not even counting the wonderful 'A Wrinkle in Time."

The Exoneration project is a lot like the Innocence Project -- the one that the 'After Innocence' documentary was about. There are all too many cases like those, to go around.

I play MahJong on the computer. There's like 50 layouts/tile designs. So you can pick the level of difficulty you want to play at.

How to speak to a service representative (or any other service person really)

I'm going to tell a little story here. There was once a large furniture showroom building that had 2 air conditioning compressors that failed at once. On one floor was a group of small dealers with about 5 different dealers in the same area. On one floor was a large dealer who was renting the entire floor, both wings. One of the wings on his floor had no a/c.

The people on the floor with the small dealers were understanding and even helpful while we tried to get their a/c fixed. One of the ladies made lemonade and gave us cookies.

The fellow in charge on the large floor took me to the side and asked that I keep 'that Mexican' off the sales floor. That 'Mexican' being my helper and friend of over 5 years.

Guess who's a/c got fixed right away, and guess who's a/c wasn't fixed till the second day of the furniture market? Not that we couldn't have fixed it, but after I told the other guys what happened we found out that we were missing a part for the second compressor. Efrain had been working there for a long time and was well liked. ;/

Here's a tip, be nice to people if you want them to do something that you really need done.

Say to yourself in the early morning: I shall meet today inquisitive, ungrateful, violent, treacherous, envious, uncharitable men. All these things have come upon them through ignorance of real good and ill.

This Marcus Aurelius still makes sense. My old sales manager, back when I was selling vacuum cleaners door to door, used to tell us something very similar to encourage us to keep on when people were really rude and insulting to us.

            He would tell me:
"You're going to meet 3 @!$%#s every single day. It's doesn't mean they're bad people, maybe they're just having a bad day. Don't let them ruin yours."

GodBlock is a web filter that blocks religious content. It is targeted at parents and schools who wish to protect their kids from the often violent, sexual, and psychologically harmful material in many holy texts, and from being indoctrinated into any religion before they are of the age to make such decisions.

            A couple of my favorites:

I did for my 35 yo son and he's more emotionally and mentally stronger today for it. I was able to practice that when I was raising him because I remembered how it was not done for me when I was growing up. I didn't want my son to suffer that.

Insofar as I may be heard by anything, which may or may not care what I say, I ask, if it matters, that you be forgiven for anything you may have done or failed to do which requires forgiveness. Conversely, if not forgiveness but something else may be required to insure any possible benefit for which you may be eligible after the destruction of your body, I ask that this, whatever it may be, be granted or withheld, as the case may be, in such a manner as to insure your receiving said benefit. I ask this in my capacity as your elected intermediary between yourself and that which may not be yourself, but which may have an interest in the matter of your receiving as much as it is possible for you to receive of this thing, and which may in some way be influenced by this ceremony. Amen.

Convictions: two counts premedicated murder on my sister kids I used to wash.

Favorite hobbies in prison: I'm active in the "political system" in here and tho I'm young I'm moving up the ranks of the strongest gang in here.

Why I deserve another chance: I deserve a husband because I deserve kids and we're allowed to have them if it's with a husband. I'm good with kids usually except that one time and I could be the best locked up mommy in the world.

                Great...just great!

Document Corrupter. It's not what you think...or maybe it is. Got an unreasonable deadline to get that school assignment or work assignment done. This site will provide a document that is corrupted and can't be opened. That can give a day or 2 breathing time to finish your report.

We have all been in the situation where we have half-finished work due tomorrow. You can upload a unfinished word document and this tool will modify it so that it cannot be opened. You can send the corrupted file instead to buy yourself some extra time.

Ok, I sent off for the street paper guide. It's a 38 page pdf, fairly short as these things go. Some interesting ideas. I'd never really seen anything like this, but the little village I live in has only got a weekly paper anyway, and it's printed in another town! :)

I like the concept of the street paper. Could be workable project for a club or some other social organization.

If I could figure out how to seed the PDF to the Vine I would. If you decide to send for it, include your zip code and if there are already any street papers in operation in your area. (Yes, they'll ask, that's why I said go ahead and do it. Saves time.) They're very nice, got my Guide and 2 page pdf about the basics yesterday.

That's too bad. It was a truly EPIC, raving, lunatic, off-the-wall-hormonal rant left on a gynecologist's answering machine by a patient. A lot of these links are years old. I keep up with and have updated some of them, but a lot were just novelties that seem to have expired.

The 2009 Federal Discretionary Budget(Death and Taxes)

Very interesting graphic presentation of the proposed budget, Bush's last as president.

"Death and Taxes" is a large representational graph and poster of the federal budget. It contains over 500 programs and departments and almost every program that receives over 200 million dollars annually. The data is straight from the president's 2009 budget request and will be debated, amended, and approved by Congress to begin the fiscal year. All of the item circles are proportional in size to their spending totals and the percentage change from 2008 is included to spot trends and disproportion.

                                          What is it really?

"Death and Taxes" is more than just numbers. It is a uniquely revealing look at our national priorities, that fluctuate yearly, according to the wishes of the President, the power of Congress, and the will of the people. Thousands of pages of raw data have been boiled down to one poster that provides the most open and accessible record of our nations' spending than ever before. If you pay taxes, then you have paid for a small part of everything in the poster. "Death and Taxes" is an essential poster for any responsible citizen or information junkie.

Federalist paper #10 James Madison. This is so relevant to what's happening now that I was shocked when I first scanned it. I read the whole thing, it's long. Madison discusses factions and their effects in a way that is still applicable today. I'll certainly be going back and reading this one again.

In answer to a growing swell of interest in realistic responses to the excesses of the present American empire, The Middlebury Institute has been launched by a group of activists and professionals to promote the serious study of separatism, secession, self-determination and similar devolutionary trends and developments, on both national and international scales.
We believe that, of the options open to those who would dissent from the actions and institutions of a government grown too big and unwieldy and its handmaiden corporate sponsors grown too powerful and corrupt, the only comprehensive and practical one is some form of separatism.

Using available technology, the Police Complaint Center documents and investigates alleged incidents of police abuse. Our staff are students, researchers, attorneys, former police officers and licensed private investigators. We believe that many police organizations have done a poor job of protecting the public from abusive officers. Our primary service is assisting victims of misconduct with reporting complaints to appropriate enforcement agencies. We also investigate police and sheriffs deputies that are accused of abusive behavior.

                                                    Operation SeaArrrgh

The name has been chosen, the date has been set! In honor of the Sea Org, we will be protesting the church on Sunday June 15th (note, this is a day after most other protests worldwide). The Sea Org is Scientology's wannabe Navy, which also perpetuates atrocities such as forced labor, coerced abortions, and cancer spreading. The Sea Org is the Scientology organization that requires members to sign a billion year contract pledging their lives, plus their "future lives," to service in the Sea Org. (Strangely, there have been no reports of any reincarnated Sea Org members signing up for their second lifetime.)

Anonymous is getting ready for a big protest on June 15th.
